Career Coaching/Counseling
Most of us spend 1/3rd of our week – approximately 2,000 hours each year
– or more, working. Research indicates that about 60% of us are dissatisfied in some way with our jobs. Where are you in your career?
Three noted authors, William Bridges, Cliff Hakim, and Charles Handy initially made the distinction between employability and employment. You’ve heard it
before – we are responsible for our own careers. But, our jobs, careers, and career dreams don’t exist in a vacuum. Often efforts to find a new job, transition to a new
career, or leverage expertise to grow your career are stalled. Why? My experience indicates three main reasons: (1) lack of information; (2) lack of strategy; and, (3) life’s
daily challenges.
Many of my current and former clients struggle to maintain focus and a commitment to finding a new job or career while simultaneously managing a variety of demands: elder care issues, children’s’ activities, or medical issues (self or spouse/partner). Finding your own footing, refocusing on what’s essential and important to you, and bringing your own career needs and
desires to the forefront are more easily accomplished with the help of a career coach and job search expert.
What can you do now to move your career or job search to the next step?
If you are facing these or similar challenges, let’s talk about how we can work together – in person or via telephone – to successfully meet your goals.

Solution |
I feel bored/unchallenged by my work.
I don’t (think I) want to continue in my current profession/field. |
Develop a targeted list of career options, make informed decisions about next steps, and create an action plan by:
Using the results of one or more career assessments focused on interests, skills, talents, values, and priorities
|
How do I identify my transferable skills?
What else can I do with my skills?
I have no clue about what I want to do – or can do – with my new college degree.
|
Identify your primary strengths and skills, and jobs/industries to apply them to by:
Using two nationally-known skills identification tools, augmented by a comprehensive analysis of current & past jobs, volunteer experience, and activities. |
I feel stuck.
I’m scared about making a change.
I’m not happy, but maybe I should stay where I am and not take a risk. |
Gain renewed inspiration to redirect your energy towards things that will bring you the satisfaction you want by:
Gaining clarity about your ambivalence, fears, and sources of motivation and assessing your risk tolerance using an in-depth questioning process and creative approaches (e.g., collage-making,
journal writing).

Susan’s Story:
A fundraising and development professional for 10 years, Susan developed a growing interest and skills in gardening and landscape design in the past 3 years. A mutual parting of the ways with her
employer created a dilemma. Susan’s initial question for me was, I’m torn. I feel responsible for contributing to my family’s financial needs – and I want to do something I’m happiest doing. Should I continue in my field or pursue a career in gardening/landscape design?
Career coaching helped Susan to:
- Understand conflicting feelings and desires
- Clarify and accept her own dreams and passions as valid
- Talk openly and honestly with her family
- Negotiate a part-time position in her field – with salary at the top of the range – creating time to continue to build a new, parallel career
-Invest in the outcome you want to create-
